The Fading Shades of Paradise

White, creation, new hope, new future
Endless life
Raise the hand to shade the eyes
Darkness encroaches
The future dims
Grey, the shades of winter
Of summers lost, of futures unseen, unheard, unborn

Green, new growth, new life, new hope
Aqua, pure water
Emerald, the colour of the waves
That brings the future to us
And with them brings the shadows
Brown, the colour of the foam as it washes onto the sand
Black, the colour of the death it leaves in it's wake
Slate, the colour of the future as we walk the beaches
Covered in the black death of pollution
The refuse of our despair
The whales and dolphins who used to sing
Now cry out in sorrow for the waste
The violent violet shades of sunrise on the brightest summer days
Through the russet shades of sunset on the dawn of always
The needles glint their deadly smiles
The sewage perfumes with malodorous air
The waste of generations that build up through time
As the future, like shadows in the darkness, disappears
Those are the fading shades of paradise
